The Transition from Technical Solver to CTO
The Situation
You have been promoted into a CTO role after building credibility through hands-on technical execution. The team still brings you complex implementation problems, and solving them yourself is often faster. At the same time, strategy, hiring, risk, communication, and organisational decisions are competing for your attention.
Moving from engineering leadership into the CTO role required a change in how I measured my own value. The behaviours that helped me succeed as an individual technical leader could become bottlenecks if I continued using them at organisational scale.
What would you do?
